It's been forever since my last update. I wish I had a valid excuse, but honestly I don't. I've been feeling really out of sorts and depressed lately. I'm slowly starting to battle back and force myself to do things that will make me feel productive and human again. Sadly, my knitting was one of the first things to go when I began to feel down. I've been kinda stagnant. I really want to get to a better place, but there's something in my chest that starts growing every time I want to do something. I get so anxious. Everything seems so overwhelming and scary and undoable. So today I decided that I'd start fixing things and trying to make myself feel better. I just checked in at knutty knitters, and I was so surprised and touched to see that they were missing me as much as I was missing them. That definitely was a big pick me up. As for my knitting, I've been working on my patchwork blanket. It's nice because it's all a bunch of small pieces, and nice and digestable.

Check out the new look!

Kynan was gracious enough to redo the outlook of my little bloggy! I'm totally smitten! I know it's been forever, and I feel positively awful about that. Life has been pretty busy lately. A few weeks ago I went on a weekend get away up to Down east Maine, then up to lovely St. John, in Canada. There I got the Stitch n Bitch Handbook, which is fantastic. I also got everything I need to make this awesome hat in there. I've started the hat a few times now, but it's on dpns, which is a new skill to me, so it's been a bit tricky. I also begin an awesome patch work knitting blanket. Kynan's been helping me out making a few squares of his own. I also got the lovely Laura Wesley to do the translating for my dawanda store, and am planning to finish up my products and get some up there today. I also am almost completely finished with big blue. The blanket itself is huge and awesome and really warm. Now I just need to attach the stars. I'll definitely post pictures of my wonderful creation.
I've decided that for today's stitch, I'll show you the one I've been using for my blanket. It's called rice stitch. Mine looks almost nothing like these pictures. I used Lion Brand Homespun yarn which is really chunky, and size 10 needles. The back looks a lot different than the front. but still wicked sick. I do think that it does look better when it's tighter though. The stitch itself is really easy. The thing I liked about it, especially when working with Kynan is that it's pretty easy to spot errors and also very easily fixed. The top picture is of the front.

Rice Stitch
Row One: *k1,p1; rep from *
Row Two: k
This is a picture of the back. It's kinda got a nifty little ribbing thing going.

On that note, I think I'm going to leave you for today. I promise that my next post will not be 20 years from now. Also, I plan to post some pictures of my WIP's and my newly completed projects.

A Day for Rain and Dye. (And a kitchen fire).

When I last left you, I had just finished preparing my yarn. Because I mistakenly saved my pictures to the internal memory of my camera, I only have pictures for the last half of this process. Next it was time to soak it in the sink in a mixture of water and vinegar. I submerged them as best I could, and left them for a half hour or so. Next I set about preparing my dyes. Following the directions, I placed each little tab in a bowl with a small amount of water, waited for it to dissolve, then added more water and stirred it up. After that I transferred each dye to it's own bottle using my funnel. Unfortunately, because I suffer from bouts of absentmindedness, I purchased the solid colored squirt bottles. After I labeled them all with my trusty Sharpie, I put my dyes in each and filled them all up. Then I laid out my trash bag on the counter, and covered that with my pieces of plastic wrap. I decided that I would start with my smallest skein, and off I went squirting it like mad. The instructions said to use a sponge brush, but I omitted getting this item at the store, and instead wastefully mopped all the excess dye up with paper towels. When I was done with my dyeing, I made my steamer.
I used my lobster pot and some tin foil. I made a bowl above the water (remembering to put the water in first), then poked some holes in the tin foil. As soon as the water began to boil and steam came out my little vents, I placed my big skein in and placed the top on. After a half our I took it out. I did this again for the other skeins. During this time, my burner caught fire and I was forced to toss my pot off, and pour water on it as the flames got bigger. I didn't really have the presence of mind to take a picture. Last winter my stove top caught fire and incinerated a toaster that was sitting on it. I got melted plastic on myself and got demoted from my job. Now I only have 2 burners left because the others got covered in plastic and had to be tossed out. Bad things happen when stoves catch fire. Anyway, not to be dettered, I moved my pot to the only other working coil. All of the skeins (and me) survived and were moved to the sink. As they cooled off the in the sink, I began to unwrap them. Once they were cool enough I submerged them in water the same temperature. Any cooler and the yarn will felt. (This actually happened to my smallest skein.)Ideally the yarn shouldn't run, but of course mine did. I drained the sink again and refilled the sink and added a dash of vinegar. I agitated them gently for a few moments, then hung them up to dry. By this time I had begun to notice that they were looking very pink, and sure enough, they were nothing but pink and white. I'm not going to lie. I'm pretty pissed. I have no flipping clue how this happened. All of the other colors disappeared. I didn't even freaking use pink. I placed a message on the discussion board at knutty knitters and the ladies at prayer shawl and so far no one has any clue what happened. I don't really even want to go in the bathroom. I'm so devastated. :( I already had decided what I was going to use the yarn for. It's been a few days, and to make matters even worse, the color has faded even more. Right now the yarn is almost white. Looks like I'll be trying out Kool Aid just as soon as I regain my nerve. And get rid of this horrible failure which is still lying on my bathroom floor.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thedefiantknitter.blogspot.com/2008/09/day-for-rain-and-dye-and-kitchen-fire.html' title='A Day for Rain and Dye. Today I went to WalMart to get some cheapy white super saver yarn. I dug out my left over egg dyeing kit, and started cleaning out both of my sinks and counter-top. The kitchen sink is almost empty for the first time in who knows how long and next I'll clean off the counter which is covered in chocolate frosting.I was going to head back to the store when Kynan got home to pick up a few more supplies, but alas, it's almost 8 and my baby still isn't home. I miss him. Oh well. I guess this will be my big project for tomorrow. Anyway, so once my dishes started drying, I set about preparing my skeins.
The result was a pathetic looking hunk of yarn all scraggly looking on the ends. The first skein I didn't think out very well and rather than wrapping the yarn completely around my arm from hand to elbow, I just went back and forth from top to bottom holding it in my hand. Then I tied it up in a few strategic places. I then tried to twist it into a figure 8.
The next one I decided to make longer, so I wrapped it around my chair. Like a fool I wrapped it vertical first, then realized that in order to get it off, I'd have to cut it. Feeling a bit humbled by my stupidity, I began again, wrapping it horizontally around the outside. I took it off and tied it just like I used to tie my t-shirts when I did tie-dye at summer camp.
For my last and most ambitious skein, I decided to make it gigantic. I wrapped it around my bookcase. I can only imagine what my neighbors must have thought as they walked by my front window and saw me tying up my helpless bookcase. Needless to say, the resulting skein was huge. I tied it up in at least 15 places, then twisted it into a beautiful figure 8 and tied it up some more. This is definitely my nicest looking. It almost looks like it was made by someone who knew what they were doing. So now I'm all set to begin my dyeing. That begins in my next entry.

No sleep for the wicked (awesome).

It's one of those rare times when I really don't feel like going to sleep. I went surfing today in the remnants of I don't know which hurricane and got totally battered. It was absolutely amazing though. I then staggered over to my mom's house where she fed me and let me curl up on the couch and catch the House marathon (hooray!). I also went to church for the first time in a few months. I briefly chatted with one of the women in prayer shawl and she lovingly offered to help me learn to knit socks and hats. I've become terrified of using multiple needles. It seems so confusing. I know I'm going to need to learn to use them if I want to do things like cabling and obviously hats and socks. I'm really excited. I also did a little reading today about dying yarn. That's another thing I'm wicked excited to try out. Apparently you can use stuff like Easter egg dye or sugar free Kool Aid. This made me happy as I conveniently just happen to have a Pas kit left over from last Easter. Tomorrow I head to the store to pick up what will hopefully be my last skein of yarn for big blue, and I think I might pick up a cheapy skein of white yarn and go for it. Naturally I'll post photos of this little experiment. I'm dying (haha) to see how this goes. I never thought something like this would make me positively giddy. (Or as much as you can be when you're totally sleep deprived.) I've also been online checking out knitting blogs, and I've compiled quite a few. I'm very pleased that I went out and did this because this, to me, is one of the most helpful tools to help me grow as a knitter. My brain is a dry little sponge that just can't wait to suck up every little bit of information it can. On a totally unrelated note: Kynan finished the banners for both my blog and my dawanda shop. I haven't posted anything yet, but I'm thisclose to getting something up. Tomorrow I'm heading over to Fedex to see how much it'll cost to send my first little project. I'm really excited to start getting my stuff up, but I really don't have a name for any of my products, and I'm dreading having to create descriptions for stuff and figure out policies and stuff. I think tomorrow I'm just going to have to suck it up and do it. Even if it's just a little bit. Now that I have a new banner for my blog, I need to re-tool my color scheme, as they are apt to clash terribly if I don't. Now it'll look big, bright and beautiful. I want to start so bad right now, but I really don't know if I'll have the energy to see it through. I start my classes again tomorrow, which is pretty exciting, and I'm almost positive I have an appointment to meet with Dr. Wyatt about maybe tweaking my meds some. I was feeling pretty crappy when I placed the call 2 weeks ago, but now I actually feel like I'm doing pretty well. I also need to mention somewhere in here that I have become a full fledged star knitting addict. I just sit and make star after star. This has led me to try and possibly create a blanket or scarf made entirely of stars. If I pull this off, consider everyone's mind blown. I might post again tomorrow, but I'll probably be busy and exhausted. Look forward to freaking awesome things later this week. (I have no idea what they are yet, but hold onto your hats folks!)

Tearing it Up! Iris's new favorite place to hang out is on the back of the love seat where I sit and knit. She can chill and look out the window at everyone and everything that comes in and out of the building. At night she curls up behind Kynan like a little fuzzball with her crazy tongue hanging out at all different angles. She looks pretty ridiculous in this picture here, but I think it's a fair representation of her character. I like this idea of taking pictures of my dog and posting them for everyone to see.
Now I just need to get some pictures of little Spirit in here. He's absolutely adorable, but he's kinda hit or miss when it comes to pictures. He looks harassed most of the time. I supposed anyone (including yours truly) would begin to look worn down if they had (v)Iris to deal with all day.

That said, I will get right down to business; me and Unicorn latch hook are currently at odds. After discovering a small problem the other night, I quickly realized that things were much worse than I thought. I then undid half the project, thought I was all set, then started again. Well I was wrong. Now I need to take it all out. Balls. I ran out of yarn to work on big blue, so I've been looking for a new mindless project while I wait. Latch hook was supposed to be that project, but instead its become an ever-escalating nightmare. Oh well.
In the interim I've started knitting the stars for my blanket. I'm rapidly becoming addicted to star knitting. I found a nifty pattern to make stars for big blue. It's a really easy pattern and can be found here. I need to be working on my flowers, but I keep screwing it up. One thing I detest is casting on like 55 stitches, messing up half way through a pattern you don't really understand, then having no choice but to take it apart. I don't mind working on tricky little patterns. I just hate having to cast on stitches over and over again.
Moving beyond that... Time for the Cause of the Day! Today's is the Heather Spoll No Hair Day Hat Program. This program works by creating groups of knitters who work expressly on making hats for chemo patients. The website provides help to start your own chemo cap knitting group or places to join one. This would be a great project for a prayer shawl ministry group, or other community service project. They also have patterns if you need an idea on what to make. This is an awesome opportunity to make someone's day, so take advantage of it!

I've been dying to try out lace for awhile now, but I've always been so nervous. My worry is that I'll spend most of my time completely lost and confused, screwing up constantly and with no idea how to fix my problems short of starting again. Finally my curiosity got the better of me and I went for it. This is a really easy lace stitch pattern that I uncovered. The picture really doesn't do it justice. Mine looked awesome and I can hardly wait to make a cute little scarf using it. It works up really quick and isn't complicated at all. So here it is!
Diagonal Eyelets
Cast on any even number of stitches
Row 1: K1 *yo, K2Tog, rep from * to last stitch, k1
Row 2: K
Row 3: K2, *yo, K2Tog, rep from * to last stitch, k2
Row 4: K
Just keep going til you're done!

And I will close with one more picture of boy and my dog.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6Det8yu8F4A/SMHoo0VRWqI/AAAAAAAAACM/AL2hoOuSp6E/s200/flowers+014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5242727229176240802" />

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thedefiantknitter.blogspot.com/2008/09/tearing-it-up-but-in-most-un-fun-way.html' title='Tearing it Up! I headed up to Maine with the fam. I hung out, read HP, worked on my puzzle and just chilled. I love not having to worry about anything. I slept late, ate when I wanted and didn't have to worry about the dogs. The sky is so clear at night, you can see straight into the Milky Way. I left my knitting at home so I could give my poor hands and wrists a break.

Which brings me to my first topic. Keeping you hands and wrists healthy! I started getting really bad wrist cramps a few weeks ago, so I decided to go online and see if anyone else had this problem, and what they did about it. And I found a few things. I found this blog article about keeping your hands healthy. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, it has a few different links to exercises, info about carpal tunnel syndrome and some wrist braces as well. I think the most important thing is just to listen to your body and if it's telling you to stop, just do it. No project is worth permanently damaging yourself.

Now onto something exciting! Unicorns! I don't know if I mentioned this, but awhile back I ordered a sick unicorn latch hook from amazon, and low and behold! it was waiting for me when I returned from Maine. I tore open the box like a kid on Christmas morning, only to discover that the latch hook wasn't included. Now I was the kid who needed batteries. So despite just driving 3 hours, we got back in the car and headed over to WalMart. I hate that place. Anyway, I picked up a hook, the yellow yarn I plan to use to make the stars on big blue and some tiny little size 4 needles to make my stars and flowers. When I got home I went straight to work on my lovely latch hook, and it totally was worth the wait. I still have a ways to go, but Kynan told me when it's done he's going to put it on his desk at work.

I'm hoping to get the flowers on my scarf today, especially now that I have my tiny little needles. Because this pattern is pretty easy, I thought I would share it with you all. I got the pattern from Stitch n' Bitch Nation. It's got some sick patterns in it, but I'm really not ready for them yet. I can make flowers though. They have patterns for a 5 and 6 petal flower. I only made 5 petal, but I'll provide the patterns for each. (Sorry for the awful quality, I've been using my old camera til we send in the new one for repair.)

5 Petal Flower

Cast on 42 stitches on straight needles (I used size 4)

Row 1: K.

Row 2: K2, *k1, slip st to left needle, lift the next 5 sts over and off the end of the needle, k slipped st again, k2; rep from * to end.

Rows 3 and 5: Purl.

Rows 4 and 6: K1, *k2tog; rep from * to end.

Break yarn and thread tail through rem sts.

6 Petal Flower
Cast on 50 stitches on straight needles.

Row 1: K.

Row 2: K2 *k1, slip st to left needle, lift next 5 sts over and off the end of the needle, k slipped st again, k2; rep from * to end.

Row 3 : K.

Row 4: *P2tog; rep from * to end.

Row 5: *K2tog; rep from * to end.

Break yarn and thread tail through rem sts.

And there you have it. And a place to put all of my old receipts. I'm calling it 'ugly dog toy'. Iris and Spirit are thrilled.

I spent 3 hours carefully following a pattern with no picture. That should have been the first clue. I had hope as it kept curving like it should. But as I neared the end of the pattern, I started praying for a miracle. By the last row, I was preparing myself for defeat. I still hadn't sewn it together, so I thought it might fit together like a magical puzzle. It totally didn't. So I stuffed it with old receipts and gave it to my dog. I also did learn how to turn. That was kinda fun. I've learned a bunch this week. I also made some nifty stars too. And some cool little flowers. I want to talk more about both, but I'm feeling lazy, so I'll wait until I can give it my fullest, sincerest attention. I also found some neat articles on how to take care of your lovely wrists and hands. That's also coming up next week.

Instead I thought I would talk about my Cause of the Day!
Today's cause is called Warm Up America.
WUA collects knit or crochet 7"x9" sections and stitches them together to create blankets for people in shelters, churches, health care facilities, nursing homes, the Red Cross and other organizations in need. You can create these squares or sections by yourself, with your friends or as a group. You can also create whole blankets if you want. The site also provides you with some simple knit and crochet patterns and tips on how to connect sections or how to finish. You can drop it off at one of their locations or mail it to:
Warm Up America! I joined ravelry, which I totally love. I've managed to find some seacoast knitting groups. One of my favorite groups is called Knutty Knitters and it's for those of us with some head problems. The women are great and I can tell already that it's going places. I'm also going to create my banner with the help of Kynan. I'm hoping to get it up on here soon, as well as on DaWanda. Which leads me to my next announcement... I've set up my shop on DaWanda! I haven't posted any items yet, but I plan to by next week. I'm not really stressed, but the whole thing is kinda daunting. I need to go find out how much it's going to cost to ship things, and who will ship my items the cheapest. I also need to figure out how I'm going to set up my payment options and what my policies will be. I think I'm gonna check other people's out and learn from trial and error.

I've decided to start featuring some awesome causes I've found.
The first one is The Special Olympics Scarf Project. The goal of this project is to give athletes a homemade scarf create an instant bond between maker and participant. This also serves to promote awareness. Their goal is to have collected 5000 scarves by January 15, 2009, just prior to the start of the Winter Games. So far they've collected over 1000. The only thing they ask is that you use Red Heart Super Saver Yarn indelft blue (#885) and white (#311). You can get this at Wal-Mart. You can also get this yarn online. You can knit or crochet any pattern you want as long as you use these yarns.
There's also a group on ravelry dedicated to this cause.

Moving on...

Today's stitch pattern is called triangle squares. This one is really easy, just like the rest I've shown you. The image doesn't do it justice, but the little square I whipped up looked pretty promising. This is a picture of the right side. The wrong looks exactly opposite. Here's the pattern:

Triangle Squares

Cast on in multiples of 5

Row 1: *p1, k4; rep from*
Row 2: *p3, k2; rep from*
Row 3: rep row 2
Row 4: rep row 1
repeat until finished!

And on that note, I'm gonna head out for the day. See you all later!

What I hate about hats... (or learning to make them)

I don't really have anything new to really talk about. I'm still working on my impossibly time consuming blanket. It's starting to get pretty big. It's going to make someone very happy one day. At least I hope it does. As fall comes around, I really need to start getting my stuff together so I can achieve my goal of opening my shop on dawanda soon. I think I'll probably check into what's required to open a paypal account very soon. I also need to put some finishing touches on a few projects that I've almost completed. I need to practice making the flowers for my scarf so they're nice and perfect. I need to start a new project to work on along with this crazy blanky. I know I want to make a hat. I've been practicing knitting circles, but it's been tough. I keep getting things all twisted up. It's so hard to keep things straight in the beginning. There are so few rows on there, you can't really tell. Once it gets all stretched tight across the needles when you're getting the first row or two, it's so hard to tell what's up or down. I didn't really get far, the edge was curling up inside the hat, so I think I'll try purling and see how that goes. The yarn I have is soft and gorgeous. I've heard a few complaints about the Lion Brand Homespun yarn, but I love it. Unfortunately, the needles I have are a little too big. I need to use size 10's, but the only pair of 10's I have are being used for big blue blankey. I'm feeling a bit lazy right now, honestly I've been in a funk lately, but I'm hoping to work my way out of it. I just sit and work on big blue all day. Tomorrow I definitely need to work on my flowers. I think I'll share that pattern with you. It's incredibly easy and pretty rockin'. Anyway, right now, I'm going to get back to watching Primeval, which is ridiculous and silly, but X-Files isn't on for another hour or so. Oh! speaking of which, my unicorn latch hook should be here any day now and I can hardly wait! I'll make sure everyone gets a good look at it. But back to the X-Files, I wanna make a giant latch hook, shag carpet of the "I want to believe" poster. It would be freaking spectacular. I found a book the other day on how to make latch hook rugs. I can't wait to get it and soak it all up. I think that latch hook will be a nice compliment to knitting. It'll be great to get a break from knitting with my wrists get tired. Tiny needles kill my wrists and hands. Oh, and so far, Primeval is just as silly and ridiculous as the ads made it appear. It's something you would more expect to see on sci-fi and not the BBC. Right now it's looking a tiny bit like land of the lost. I can assure you however, that no matter how poor the cgi, lame the plot lines and horrible the acting, I'll probably be seeing a lot more of this show. Oh! I also did manage to join two knitting groups on facebook. Now I just need to stay active in them. I think I need to join a few more, and get to know some people. I need to find some other knitting bloggers I can work and talk with.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thedefiantknitter.blogspot.com/2008/08/what-i-hate-about-hats-or-learning-to.html' title='What I hate about hats... It's my 21st birthday! I couldn't be happier. I just got back from breakfast with my mom and sister. It was delicious and made me so happy. :) I've been trying to come up with something to mention, but after talking with my darling sister, Emily, I have decided to talk about binding (casting) off. Binding off is wicked easy. I always forget how to do it though. It's one of those essential skills that I use so infrequently. Maybe it's because I make lots of blankets, or because it takes me forever to finish anything. As soon as I look it up though, it comes rushing back. There are a bunch of different ways to bind off based on what you're doing, but I'm going to start with the easiest. I haven't really tried any of the other kinds simply because I didn't really know about them, and I never really had the need to learn them. I hit up the net, and I found what appears to be a very promising site called knittinghelp.com. It has actual video of all the different bind offs. If you can't be bothered to check it out, here is my own description of the binding off procedure.

First, knit two stitches just like you have been.

Next, pull the bottom stitch over the top one and off the end of the needle.

Knit the next stitch, then repeat the second step.

When you get to the last two stitches, pulled the bottom over and off the top, just like you have been.

Leaving a nice long tail (you'll go back later and weave this piece through so no one knows it ever existed), cut the yarn. Next, slip the end through your last remaining loop. Pull it tight and you're all set!

On that note, it's time for the pattern of the day!
Today's pattern is insanely easy, and really nifty. This would make a awesome looking scarf. It's the two by two rib, and it looks like this:

Two by two rib
Cast on in multiples of 4.
Row 1- k2,p2
Repeat 'til you're done!

I'm certain that you could easily make you ribs wider. I realize that it would no longer be a 2x2 rib, but it would still look sick. To make your ribs wider, just add more knit stitches. Of course, this means you'd need change your multiples. Say you wanted to make your ribs just a bit wider, just add one more knit, so you'd knit 3, purl 2, then you'd have to cast on in multiples of 5. You could change the purls too. Just keep messing around with it until you're pleased with the dimensions. I just like to think about how rockin' a scarf with some nifty looking stripes going from top to bottom.

It's Monday!

Hope everyone had a great weekend! I stayed pretty busy watching the Olympics and re-arranging the living room. I'm also pleased to report that I have come to possess a new computer, which should make this much easier. I also managed to find the memory card reader for my old camera, so now uploading pictures will be much easier, so expect lots of pictures! All weekend I've been trying to decide what I want to talk about. I haven't really come up with much, so I think I'll start off with my pattern of the day. I spent a little while trying to kinda perfect this one. After trying it with a few different types of yarn, I came to the conclusion that this pattern would look awesome and really defined with small needles, and with light worsted or finer yarn. So here it is: the diagonal rib.

The pattern is pretty easy, it takes more attentiveness than the check pattern or the seed stitch, but it's certainly not complicated. I absolutely can't wait to use this pattern.

Diagonal Rib
Cast on stitches in multiples of 4.
Row 1: *k2,p2; rep from *
Row 2: rep. row 1
Row 3: k1, *p2, k2; rep from *, end p2, k1
Row 4: p1, *k2, p2; rep from *, end k2, p1
Row 5: *p2, k2; rep from *
Row 6: rep. row 5
Row 7: rep. row 4
Row 8: rep. row 3

repeat rows 1-8

Easy enough, right?

Day Two.

Part of my reason for waiting to start a blog was my worry that I wouldn't have anything to write about or show people. My posts would be useless and boring. So I decided to check out the net, and see what nifty things I could find. The first place I headed was the Lion Brand yarn website. It's really helpful, and if you want, you can sign up for a weekly email. They have this really neat pattern finder, where you just enter the yarn you're using, who you're making it for (babies, men, dogs, etc..), and most importantly, the difficulty level. They have tons of free patterns, so I'd highly recommend it. They also have the all important abbreviations page.

I've also decided to feature different stitch patterns a few times a week. My plan is to test them first, so that I, as a relatively new knitter can honestly attest to the difficultly level each pattern. My first pattern is one of my favorites, the check stitch. It's really simple, and like most stitch patterns can be altered to fit your personal preferences. The pattern I originally found was for small stitches and looked like this:

Creating this is simple, just cast on your stitches in multiples of 3 and just knit and purl away.

Close Checks
Cast on stitches in multiples of three.
Rows 1-4 *purl 3, knit 3; rep from *
Rows 5-8 *knit 3, purl 3: rep from *
just keep this up til you reach the end, and voilà! A beautiful check blanky, or scarf or whatever!
I decided that I wanted huge checks, so using what I learned making the little checks, I just amplified the pattern.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Det8yu8F4A/SJyPTOcUUhI/AAAAAAAAAAc/se45_ws_KaE/s320/bigchecks.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5232214427554828818" />

I made mine with multiples of five. So I cast on 75 stitches, purled the first 5, knit the next 5 and just kept going. To make my checks square, I did this for 5 rows, then switched it up. For the next 5 rows, I knitted then purled. I also came to notice that all of the purled stitches on the right side were raised and all the knitted stitches were flat. This is an easy way to figure out where you are.

Introductions.

It should have been apparent to me as soon as I began to knit feverishly that it was only a matter of time before I started keeping a record of some type to remember all of my frustrations, anxieties, successes, ambitions and purposes. Now that I'm getting closer to opening my online shop, that thought is becoming better than ever. The idea of blogging about my knitting experiences first came to me when I began to look around for a blog to read as I developed as a knitter. I found plenty of knitting blogs, but not a whole lot that were meant for people in the earliest stages of their lives as knitters. So here is my place to post what does and doesn't work, patterns I've found or created and other nifty stuff. When I open my shop this fall, I'll post all of my products here ahead of time to give everyone a chance to snag stuff up before the rest of the world does. I'm also hoping that this blog gives me the chance to meet with like-minded thinkers, and get myself wholly involved in the world of knitting.

That said, I suppose I'll talk a little about my two current projects. My first is a rather ambitious midnight blue blanket. The plan is to create a blanket that resembles the midnight sky. It's made out of soft acrylic, dark blue yarn. I chose size 10 circular needles to make it nice and tight and defined.

Seed Stitch
If using an odd number of stitches:
Row 1: k1, *p1, k1; rep. from *
Repeat this row

If using an even number of stitches:
Row 1: *k1, p1; rep. from *
Row 2: *p1, k1; rep. from*
Repeat these rows.

I'm trying the seed stitch for the first time, which is easy enough- knit, purl, knit purl, forever- as long as you keep remember to do so. If not, you get this annoying ribbing. Naturally, I screwed up. Another thing I constantly had to remind myself to do was to move my yarn back to front, front to back. Otherwise you end up adding stitches. I had to place close attention in the beginning. I also discovered that all odd stitches will be knit and all even stitches will be purled. I used an odd number of stitches (125) and discovered quickly that if I arrived at the end of my row and the last stitch was a knit, then I was set. If it was a purl, I need to go back. Because I was new to this stitch, and a bit lazy, I didn't. I didn't really have an idea what I was looking for because I didn't have much experience, and I was to lazy to do the whole row again. So I kept going, and going, and going. Well, about 5 inches in, my little mistake became glaringly obvious. After thinking about how to fix or hide, I opted to just tear the whole thing up a start again. This time I add 20 more stitches just to be safe. It's taken awhile to work up, but I'm getting there. I'm so glad that the dark cloud that was my screw up is know longer hanging over my head. Once I get this all finished, the next step is going to be adding the stars. That's going to be my finishing touch. I want to place little yellow stars all over the blanket. That's my next challenge. Learning how to knit stars. Tomorrow I'll show you the ridiculously crazy yarn I'm using to make a scarf with. If I can get my old camera working properly.
